For nearly twelve years the FBI has flown Tom Callahan in whenever something falls out of the sky. He’s an engineer, not a hero, and he likes it that way.

Then an airliner goes down on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, and one passenger doesn’t add up: a man on the manifest, in a seat the crew swore was empty.

His widow comes to Tom for help. By the next night she is dead, the analyst who warned him has been shot with Tom’s own gun, and the Bureau he served is hunting him for both.

Behind the crashes stands the Gathering: a church with friends in the Senate, a private army called Golden Saber, and a prophet named Elijah who chooses who dies next. For reasons no one inside the Gathering understands, Elijah keeps letting Tom go.

On a militia farm in Mississippi, Tom finds the one person who has been hunting the same pattern from the other end. Cassie Jansen is twenty-one, a hacker who calls herself The Greek, and her mother died on one of those planes. Together they follow the dead to Watercrest, the estate on a Virginia lake where the Gathering keeps its prophet, and to a truth worse than any crime they could have pinned on him.

Clearing his name was never going to be enough.
